Next Step Consulting

Brian’s introduction to the seafood industry was in the summer of 1974, working in a saltfish factory on Grimsey, Iceland. That winter, he crewed on a small fishing boat, tub trawling for groundfish and then gillnetting for lumpfish. After returning to the States, he spent a decade as a commercial fisherman out of Stonington, Maine. He worked on gillnetters, lobster boats, and scallopers, always on small boats. He transitioned indoors, working as a managing editor for a national fishing product tabloid, and then moved to organizing the seafood trade shows in Boston, Brussels, Singapore, and Rimini. He later joined the Marine Stewardship Council as Regional Director for the Americas for 6 years, then finished his active career as CEO of the Global Seafood Alliance.
In retirement, he is active as a mentor for The Maine Center for Entrepreneurs and a member of the recently formed Maine Seafood Promotion Council.
He is an avid storyteller, having been on the Moth stage in Washington, DC, for three Story Slams and two Grand Slams.
