Katherine (Kate) Wright has over 12 years of experience in academia, government and the private sector, primarily in applied fisheries management, life-cycle analysis and ecolabelling. Kate is a PhD candidate at Heriot-Watt University, studying the carbon release pathways in wild-capture fisheries and is also the Senior Program lead on Greenhouse Gas emissions (GHG) at the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), developing an MSC GHG Reporting System and supporting online calculator that can be used voluntarily by MSC-certified entities to validate and disclose GHG emissions in their fishing operations. Kate is co-convenor of the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS) climate change research forum; a member of the Defra Food Data Transparency Partnership (FDTP) Eco working group; and leads ToR c for the ICES Fish Carbon Working Group. Her previous experience includes delivering audits against the MSC and Marin Trust certification schemes at Lloyd’s Register as Senior Fisheries Technical Officer and maintaining Fish Producer Organisation (PO) compliance in England under UK/EU Common Market Organisation (CMO) regulation 1379/2013 as Principal Fisheries Manager at the Marine Management Organisation (MMO). Kate has practical knowledge of fisheries and environmental management and enforcement under UK and EC legislation, with a long-term focus on improving the sustainability of fisheries worldwide. Kate holds an MSc in Environmental Management and is currently based in Edinburgh, UK.
