José Luis Carrillo Galaz
President
CONMECOOP
José Luis Carrillo Galaz, also known as Chino Carrillo, boasts over 40 years of experience in the fishing industry. Initially, José Luis spent two years in law school before opting to pursue a career on the ocean rather than behind a desk. Over the years, he has progressed from a fisherman to a boat captain, eventually becoming an elected representative of the industry. Currently, he serves as the president of the Confederación Mexicana de Cooperativas de Pesqueras y Acuícolas CONMECOOP (the Mexican Confederation of Fishing and Aquaculture Cooperatives). This national organization unites approximately 520 fishing cooperatives across most coastal states of Mexico, representing over 40,000 fishermen. In his role, José Luis collaborates with various levels of government to formulate and implement public policies aimed at the growth and modernization of the fishing and aquaculture sectors. He also works closely with federations affiliated with CONMECOOP to strengthen the organization of the artisanal fishing sector and capitalize on development opportunities.
Originally from Progreso, Yucatán, where he still resides, José Luis is deeply engaged in his work. As president of the Board of Directors at CONMECOOP, he focuses on consolidating the coastal sector’s organization and exploring opportunities for expansion into national and international markets. His efforts have included participating in various trade missions abroad.
